Platform for diagnostic of neurological diseases based on movement analysis

 

The methods and state-of-the art techniques to diagnose and treat patients with neurodegenerative disease have evolved rapidly over the last decades. It is still, however, a very challenging task to both diagnose and find the optimal strategy of treatment for patients who suffer from neurodegenerative diseases. The doctors relay heavily on the information from the patients themselves. Objective data concerning the patient’s actual movements or seizures during their ordinary day would be very valuable for the doctors. Acreo is developing systems based on accelerometers and gyros to analyze the movement from patients with neurodegenerative disease, such as epilepsy and Parkinson. The doctors will in the future be able to make their diagnosis based on a large amount of measurements from the patient’s daily life during the whole period between the patient´s visits to the hospital. The aim of the future product is to give objective data of the patient´s movement and thus a much better base for the treatment. This will improve the process to find the right treatment and thus reduce time and cost for the health care and for the patients. The patients will also feel safer knowing that objective data concerning their state of health is stored.

EPI

The purpose is to develop a sensor system which detects epileptic seizures. The project is run in cooperation with Sahlgrenska akademin and measurements are made at the Sahlgrenska Hospital. Promobilia partly funds the project.

Parkinson

The purpose is to develop a sensor system which can recognize the degree of Parkinson based on a specific test motion.  We have received financing from Innovationskontoret Väst in order to verify the ideas.
