Photonics in power electronics for efficient power grids and smarter electrical energy distribution - R&D

High voltage components for power grids is an area where Sweden has traditionally been a very strong international position, through companies such as ABB and its suppliers. And the world market for this segment is believed to increase due to increasing electricity production partly and due to a significant expansion of wind and solar power.

Since conventional electrical sensor can't be used near high-voltage components thera are today no good technique for condition monitoring. Fiber optic sensors can, however, be used in these environments and with those integrated into the high-voltage components it is possible to more efficient use of electricity as well as to the development of'smart-Grid 'initiative.

 

In the recently completed feasibility Project the concept to integrate fiber optics was found to be feasible and in this R&D project focus will be on:

  • Development and production of fiber optics including coatings, particularly suitable for embedding in the current process
  • Development of industrial mass production processes for fiber integration
  • Reliability and lifetime tests
  • Manufacturing of complete prototypes for electrical and functional testing
  • Installation and evaluation in the power grid of electricity distributor
  • Develop plan and strategy for commercialization.
