IMPSEN – Impact of novel harsh environment sensing on future process control and automation

The understanding and improving of complex industrial processes is a key factor to the development and success of Swedish process industry companies.

And the process industry is facing several challenges, including competitiveness, energy and resource efficiency, as well as safety that require a radical change in the control and optimization of its own processes along the whole value chain, from the extraction of natural resources to the end-of-life management of products. .

In order to realize these changes, more precise information about processes is required, and therefore better sensing capabilities..

Based on the needs described above and those identified during interviews at the process industry, a wide range of research groups and sensor companies have been contacted in order to identify novel technologies that could be relevant for harsh environment processes.

A workshop in the same subject where process- and automation industry discussed with representatives for novel sensor technologies was performed in the frame of the same project.

The report summarizes the most promising novel sensor technologies, research results, and actors in robust sensors for harsh environments identified. And the document aims to support Swedish process and automation industry in their preparation for implementation of new sensor technologies in order to meet the expected challenges in the future.
