The alarming situation!

Driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the major causes of fatal traffic accidents every year all over the world. The situation is being improved by legislation and law enforcement.
Sweden is a forerunner by having set a low concentration limit of 0.02% blood alcohol concentration and by its frequency of police controls. Sweden has also pioneered the use of alcolocks in the quality assurance of transportation services.

Despite these efforts, approximately 150 Swedes are killed each year in these types of accidents. A technological leap is needed before alcolocks can be accepted by the vast majority of vehicle drivers.

The KAIA sensor technology works with infrared (IR) spectroscopy, which performs much better than do conventional alco-detector devices. The KAIA concept uses contact-free measurement of concentrations of alcohol and carbon dioxide in the drivers’ exhaled air. The driver blows at a distance of 10-15 centimeters from the sensor device. A patented optical device using multiple reflections calculates the level of alcohol with high resolution.
