ACINO - Application Centric IP/Optical Network Orchestration

Acreo starts new project on future Software-Defined transport networks

Acreo has started a new project on Software-Defined transport networks as part of the EU Horizon 2020 research program.

The Application Centric IP/Optical Network Orchestration (ACINO) project aims to offer a more programmable and dynamic infrastructure to business applications. This will allow, for instance, cloud applications (like Google, Yahoo, Amazon, Facebook) or traditional network operators to transfer and protect large amounts of data in a more effective way by using application-specific operations. This could be, for example, the migration of virtual machines or the backup of data (e.g. sensitive financial or social network data) as well as the distribution of content (e.g. video-on-demand) over large geographical areas.

ACINO exploits the application-centric concept where applications (like video or mobile communication traffic) are directly mapped on the optical layer avoiding the grooming process that affects performance and makes impossible to meet the application requirements.  ACINO develops an Software-Defined-Network-based controller capable of managing the transport (Internet Protocol/Optical) networks operating in the core and backbone segments of telecommunication networks.

Acreo implements the project with five other European partners.
