100 Gigabit Ethernet Transport Technologies

Acreo participated in the sub-project 100GET-ER, which was coordinated by Ericsson Research. The research was focused on cost-effective transceiver topologies to achieve extremely high spectral efficiency for 100 Gb/s optical transmission.

Two Acreo specific achievements were made in collaboration with Ericsson Research. One was the successfully performed field trials (at 100 Gbit/s and over a 500 km distance of deployed fiber) using a developed solution combining SCM (sub-carrier multiplexing) and 16-QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) in the electronic domain, together with dual polarization and coherent detection in the optical domain. Acreo developed the DSP (digital signal processing) algorithms used in the final demonstrator. The other achievement was successful development of ASIC (application specific integrated circuit) implementations of the RF components utilizing ST Microelectronic’s 65nm SOI (Silicon on insulator) CMOS technology.

The 100GET project was awarded the Celtic Excellence Award in Gold for "outstanding performance and results" in 2011 (see pressrelease) and the Celtic-Plus Innovation Award in 2013 (see news item).
