New 5G Research Lab Fosters Collaboration

Acreo Swedish ICT, in cooperation with Ericsson and KTH, launched the Kista 5G Transport Lab in 2014 - a key to fulfilling the demands of the truly Networked Society of the future.

The telecom industry is engaged in constant, fast-paced change. New services, applications and network solutions are introduced every year. The user-driven mass adoption of mobile broadband is driving network transformations that call for optimizing transport, routing and services in the backhaul network. At the same time, access networks are becoming more varied and complex. Future networks must be able to deliver the connectivity needed for expanded user services and cloud connectivity, as well as serve as a platform for service innovation. The new Kista 5G Transport Lab is designed to meet these demands.

“In the new lab, we are working toward structural and architectural changes that go beyond today’s state-of-the-art networks and look toward the advent of 5G, which we anticipate in 2020”. says Peter Öhlen, Ericsson Research. “We want to show ways in which programmable transport networks can be used as a platform for applications, user services and network services.”

Ericsson, Acreo Swedish ICT and KTH Royal Institute of Technology are all leaders in transmission and networking research, whose resources and competencies are now being pooled in a powerful collaboration. Through the 5G Transport Lab, researchers and PhD students contribute concept evaluations, simulations, and prototype design and implementation, while Ericsson ensures that the work has long-term industrial relevance. 

“This first year has been intense. We have set up a testbed, and performed initial demonstrations of the key concept”, says Sandor Albrecht, Research Director IP and Transport, Ericsson. “In October, BBC News visited us at Ericsson headquarters and the Lab, to do a 5G Click story”. 

The overall goal for the collaboration is to develop a prototype that demonstrates a fully automated process from application to setup of the optical interface, and finally equipment and network connection. Within that scope, three main topics will be addressed: network flexibility, network programmability, and network performance.

"In the past, it took more than ten years to go from idea to product. Now it only takes a few years. One strategy to ensure competitiveness in a rapidly changing world is to shorten the time from research to market launch. That is where Kista 5G Transport Lab comes in,” concludes Anders Berntson, Acreo Swedish ICT.

The project is partly funded by VINNOVA, the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems, and Ericsson.
