Optical Transmission

RISE Acreo is an internationally recognized research partner with leading-edge competence in the area of optical transmission. Besides participating in major European and Swedish research projects, we also offer custom research and development directly to the industry. Some examples of what we can offer are listed below.

High-speed transmission research

RISE Acreo performs research in areas such as coherent communications, advanced modulation formats (dual-polarization QPSK, 16-QAM, etc.) and DSP (digital signal processing) algorithms for mitigation of signal impairments caused by e.g. laser phase noise and fiber nonlinearities. This research has resulted in numerous patents and scientific publications.

One current focus area is flexible transmitter and receiver subsystems for generation and detection of so called superchannels with adaptive spectrum and data rate. Another increasingly important topic is cost- and energy-efficient optical transport for converged metro and aggregation networks supporting mobile backhaul as well as other traffic.

Our transmission research is based on extensive hands-on experience with practical DWDM systems and subsystems, numerical modeling and simulations, and experiments using lab equipment. Through Kista High Speed Transmission, operated jointly with KTH, we have access to a fully equipped laboratory for advanced transmission experiments.

Qualificaion of optical components and systems

RISE Acreo has access to advanced measurement equipment for testing the performance of components, subsystems and complete systems. We offer this as a service to the industry, supporting development processes and independent evaluations of existing solutions.

Consulting on optical network upgrades

We offer our expertise to network operators related to capacity upgrade strategies, analysis of specifications and requirements for optical network equipment, and independent evaluation of proposals from system vendors.

Fiber measurements

RISE Acreo offers characterization of installed fiber in terms of important quality aspects such as PMD (Polarization Mode Dispersion) and related parameters. This may be an important basis for network operators who are about to make decisions and cost estimates before upgrading to higher capacity in their networks.
