Acreo FiberLab

Acreo FiberLab is your resource  in Northern Europe  for  develop­ment, design, and  production of specialty fibers  and preforms.

We are equipped with the latest instrumentation for development, manufacture and characterization of high quality optical fibers, preforms and preform cores, and are staffed with highly skilled researchers and operators.

Our facilities include a Nextrom OFC-12 MCVD system and two 12 meter drawing towers with coating capabilities for UV-cured and thermally cured coatings such as acrylates, polyimides and silicones. Nylon and Tefzel jacketing is an option. Fiber glass diameters may be varied from 60 to 1500 microns. The lab has extensive glass working capabilities, preform refractive index profiler, SEM/EDS, FT-IR, instrumentation for fiber spectral attenuation and cut-off measurements, dispersion analyzer, OTDR, fiber proof tester, and fiber refractive index profiler.

Microstructured fiber

Acreo offers you fibers with

  • One or several holes
  • One or several cores
  • Alignment grooves
  • Other geometries than circular
  • Low-index, high-temperature, or other high-performance coatings.

Fibers with integral electrodes
Acreo has developed processes for filling micro­structured fibers with metal alloys. The electrodes are continuous over several meters. Using short sections of such fiber, Acreo has demonstrated principles for all-fiber polarization controllers, modulators, and switches.

Doped fiber
Acreo employs different doping techniques for manufacturing fibers and preforms with rare earths, transition metals and other dopants. 

Acreo possesses particular expertise in highly doped erbium fibers and their application in amplifiers (EDFAs). We collaborate with research groups from the Mid Sweden University, Uppsala and Linköping Universities, and with Ericsson Network Technologies. This consortium covers the full spectrum of theoretical atom physics, quantum chemistry, molecular dynamics, precursor synthesis, preform manufacture, fiber drawing, spectroscopy and fiber system know-how.

SME support and fiber optics education and training
Acreo FiberLab is an important partner of the regional innovation system Fiber Optic Valley (www.fiberopticvalley.se) and gives in that role business and product development support to SMEs and participates in different educational programs, e.g. a one year fiber optic program within the MSEE education at Mid Sweden University, and a one year course in fiber optic network building and maintenance, unique in Europe, at Center of Development and Learning (CUL) within Acreo FiberLab.

Collaboration with Acreo
Acreo works extensively with industry and academia in Sweden and abroad, delivering fibers and participating in joint R&D and educational programs.

We offer products and services including small volume production in the area of specialty fibers, and interested parties are invited to discuss the de­tailed forms and conditions for collaboration.
