The switching of conducting polymers by electrochemistry between different red/ox states (e.g. doping and de-doping) alters their conducting properties, and this can be utilized to construct electrochemical transistors.
We have mainly studied devices based on commercially available polymers such as PEDOT:PSS, PANI, Polypyrrole and Polyhexylthiophene, where the impedance can be modulated upon electrochemical switching between the different red/ox states.
Several novel EC transistor designs and modes of operation have been investigated. Transistors with an on/off ratio in the range 100 to 1000 and switching speeds ranging from mHz to 100 Hz have been realized. Switching voltages are typically 0,5-2,0 V. Voltages up to 70 V and currents up to the mA range can be modulated. Reel-to-reel production processes for EC transistors and circuits are developed in our printing labs.
