Dry Phase Patterning

of foil laminates

Technology and processing

Acreo has developed Dry Phase Patterning (DPP), a method for patterning metal layers on flexible substrates. Test structures in foil- and evaporated aluminium have been manufactured on PET- and paper substrates. Process speed up to 150 m/min and line pitch down to 300 microns have been demonstrated. Components that easily can be produced are all kind of passive components on flexible substrate such as conductors, resistors, inductors and antennas.

To its disposal Acreo has a laboratory production line. In the production line some hundreds of thousands square meters of patterned Al foil can be produced. This is however a small line for non-commercial production. Acreo collaborate with a supplier that can scale up production to commercial levels. In the laboratory line tests of new materials and patterns can be performed. Acreo has been part in the entire development and has vast experience in tuning and developing the process line for new purposes.

One of the main benefits of the DPP-method is the reduced load on the environment. This is mainly because of reduced energy consumption; no washing, brushing or drying is necessary. Since no chemicals are used the residual product is in a dry and easily recyclable phase. Besides, there is no need for destruction of hazardous wastes.
