OpenChoice open TV
Back in 2006 the Open TV Coordination Group consisting of SABO, Fastighetsägarföreningen, Hyresgästföreningen and Stadsnätsföreningen made a declaration that also TV services shall be available to all endusers without market lock-ins as proprietary HW (Set top box). That was to avoid future scenarios like the one in the picture. Later on Riksbyggen joined the group.
The Group involved Acreo as their technical partner and Acreo created a reference platform meeting the requirements. It was first called the basebox environment but changed later name to OpenChoice.
OpenChoice is defined by its functional and technical requirements, see www.openchoice.tv.
In short terms OpenChoice offers
- Set top box is independent of chosen Operator and Service provider
- End user can choose TV channels from different suppliers
- A defined and published service API for easy creation of services.
Today OpenChoice is running in almost 20 city networks in Sweden and supported by operators as OC1, Zitius, OpenNet and Telia. The approval of being an OpenChoice is given by the the OpenTV coordination group.
Acreo as technical partner to the OpenTV Coordination group is responsible for the technical coordination and strategy for the OpenChoice environment. Acreo's assignment is to maintain the OpenChoice reference platform located in the Swedish test bed. This reference platform is the base for the OpenChoice standardisation and verification work.
