One of the latest companies in which Acreo has an interest is Svedice AB in Järfälla. Svedice is not an ordinary spin-off from Acreo. It is actually a spin-out from Northlight Optronics AB which in its turn originated from the Ericsson activities in the optoelectronic area for telecommunication applications.
During the autumn it came to an opportunity for management buy-out of the operations. At the same time there was a chance to broaden the offer to provide customized InP-semiconductor foundry solutions to a broad customer base.
Acreo with its long experience in different techniques for epitaxial growth of compound semiconductors and the needs that emanate from the research activities at KPRC, Kista Photonics Research Center, immediately saw the synergy – linking the research and development acitivities in Kista with the production facilities in Järfälla. Aside from the close cooperation with Acreo support is also provided to the company from STING (Stockholm Innovation and Growth) and Vinnova.
Svedice is a co-user of the cleanroom facilities hosted by Zarlink Semiconductor AB in Järfälla, the same facilities which Silex AB, another spin-off from Acreo, currently is using for their production. Svedice provides customized InP-semiconductor foundry solutions in its state-of-the-art ISO-certified 800sq.m. cleanroom facilities of class 1000. The company offers semiconductor processing services as well as design services.
For wafer- and Chip-on-carrier-processing, Svedice offers services like III-V epitaxial growth, materials characterization, e-beam, lithography, etching, metallization and testing. For device design, computer simulation tools in combination with 20 years of design experience in the team are available.
Among its services are 1310nm and 1550nm laser-devices, including tuneables, as well as PIN-and APD- (avalanche photodetector) receivers for 2.5 Gb- and 10Gb-applications.
The main focus on manufacturing devices for telecom and datacom applications is broadened into devices used in sensor, medical and military applications.
