Microwave Photonics - Radio over Fiber
Processing microwaves in the optical domain
Transmission of RF signals on optical carriers in fibers is a very attractive alternative to purely wireless or coaxial solutions. Apart from the obvious benefits of low loss over long distances, wide bandwidths, and insensitivity to EM noise, new opportunities of processing micro- or millimeter wave signals in the optical domain arise. Optical processing of microwave signals is one of Acreo's specialities.
Some of the functions that can be implemented are RF generation, up/down conversion, filtering, phase shifting, true-time delays and A/D conversion.
Acreo acts as the Swedish coordinator in NEFERTITI, a European Network of Excellence aiming to advance Europe's position in microwave photonics. NEFERTITI involves 28 organizations from eight countries.
